situated near between Tullamore and Birr, take a turn in Kilcormack and go back 6,000 years. Actually, History has had to be rewritten to take into account the findings in Lough Boora. It goes back to the end of the Little Ice Age, when the ice was 1 mile high. but 7,000 years ago there were humans who could light fires, had tools and ate lots of oysters and hazel nuts. Not sure they were Celts. The habitat is bog land. Because it is preserved, there are lots of birds and plants and this is an ideal place to go for a walk, cycle or wander. It is on the Offaly way. A huge effort has been made to bring the landscape to life. Many artists have constructed beautiful sculptured with materials found in the bog. Some of these need to be climbed on to appreciate them fully. There are wonderful bog oaks that are over 5,000 years old. The fairy avenue is pretty and clever with living huts and passages made from willow. A bug hotel has very few guests. Cabhair ,the fairy in charge of worries ,is just waiting to scoop all your worries. Bicycles can be hired. We recommend the tandem for small legs. Put the athletic adult in front.
